MkIV AVRE Graye-sur-Mer,
Normandy

"Charlie One" (One Charlie?) is the original Mk IV AVRE that was abandoned in a crater on 6th of June 1944, only to be recovered in November1976. See After the Battle magazine and Trevor Larkum's 'Preserved Tanks in France'. The loss of this AVRE is also described in short in Fletcher's 'Vanguard of Victory'.

It is on display along the coastal road D514, just west of Courseulles-sur-Mer and north of Graye-sur-Mer

MkVI Musée des Blindés,

Presented by the Museum as a Churchill MkV this vehicle would appear to have a 75mm gun with a late cast MkIV turret and so may be a MkIV (75mm) or MkVI. Note the external mantlet - this is I beleive an original field modification - I have seen a wartime photograph with exactly the same modification.

A brass plaque attached to its left front fender states:
"THIS CHURCHILL AVRE WAS REFURBISHED BY 15 FD WKSP 6 BN REME DURING MARCH/APRIL 1994"

The plaque on a stone to its right reads:
"6 Juin 1944 6 Juin 1994 CHAR CHURCHILL OFFERT PAR LE GENERAL SIR IAN HARRIS QUI COMMANDAIT LE BATAILLON D'INFANTERIE LE JOUR J 2nd R.U.R. (ROYAL ULSTER RIFLE)"
Translation: "6 June 1944 / 6 June 1994 / Churchill Tank offered by General Sir Ian Harris who commanded the infantry battalion on D-Day 2nd R.U.R."

It is located along the coastal road D514 as well, just west of Lion-sur-Mer.

Mk VII Le Havre,
Battlefield Memorial.

Memorial dedicated on Sunday 10th September 2000 on the 56th anniversary of the land assualt on Festung Le Harve. The Churchill has been named ASTONIA which was the codeword of the operation in 1944.

Donated by Bovington this Churchill Mk.VII was previously a gate guardian at the Queens Own Yeomanry Dale Barracks, Chester, UK. It is to be mounted on a plinth near the port as a permanent memorial to the 79th Armoured Div. for their part in the assault on the port. Has a dummy barrel.
